Diaper Changing & Potty Training

Policy:

To ensure the health, safety, and dignity of all children during diaper changing and potty training, while promoting independence and hygiene practices.

Parents are to supply diapers or pull ups, wipes and diaper cream for their child/ren

Diaper Changing Policy & Procedure:

  1. Preparation

  • Gather all necessary supplies (clean diaper, wipes, diaper cream if needed, gloves, designated area).

  • Disinfect the Mat

  • Wash Hands

  • Wear disposable gloves (only for Bowel Movement (BM) changes, if needed)

  1. Diaper Changing Process:

  • Place the child on a designated, sanitized changing area.

  • Remove clothing to access diaper. If soiled, place clothes into plastic bag

  • Remove the soiled diaper and clean the child with wipes, wiping front to back.

  • Dispose of the soiled diaper and wipes in a sealed diaper pail.

  • Apply diaper cream if necessary, using a clean glove or applicator.

  • Put on a fresh diaper and redress the child. Encourage older Children to pull up their pants

  • Remove gloves and wash hands thoroughly.

  • Spray diapering surface with bleach-water solution and wait more than 10 seconds before wiping with disposable towel and allow to air dry. It should be noted that the recommended practice is to wait for 2 minutes to allow the solution to kill the germs. However, if there is a delay of at least 10 seconds before the solution is wiped from the surface, this will be considered adequate. The surface cannot be sprayed and immediately wiped.

  • Wash hands again.

  • Document the diaper change in Lillio App and communicate with parents about any concerns (e.g., rash, unusual stool).

  1. Hygiene & Safety Measures:

    • Always wash hands before and after each diaper change.

    • Ensure the changing area is cleaned and sanitized after each use.

    • Never leave a child unattended on the changing table, always keep a hand on the child if you are moving. Never take your hand off.

    • Use individual diapering supplies for each child to prevent cross-contamination.

  2. Additional Precautions

  • The diapering surface must be sanitized after each diaper change with a bleach-water or other approved sanitizing solution (all surfaces must be sanitized – e.g., no quilted pads or safety straps, no containers that are stored on the diapering surface). The bleach-water solution must be allowed to stay on the surface for more than 10 seconds, and ideally 2 minutes, to kill the germs. So it is best for staff to spray the surface as the last step of the diapering procedure before washing their own hands. After the time lapse, the surface can be dried (no additional handwashing required at this time) or allowed to air dry (and wiped dry if still damp) before use with another child.

  • Diapers are disposed of in a hands-free covered can (usually one that has a step pedal that lifts the lid) to prevent further contamination of surfaces.

  • Toys that are played with or objects that are touched, while children’s diapers are changed, must be put aside to be sanitized.

  • Best practice would be to wash child’s and staff’s hands after the diapering procedure is completed
